This guide covers Subaru Liberty remote (keyless entry) programming across common year ranges from 1998 to 2020.
⚠️ Important
These procedures program remote locking functions only (lock/unlock).
They do NOT program immobiliser transponder chips, smart/proximity keys, or push-to-start systems.
If your Subaru Liberty won’t enter programming mode or the remote isn’t accepted, the vehicle may require diagnostic key or immobiliser programming.

Before You Start (Critical Subaru Note)
For many Subaru Liberty models in these year ranges, remote programming requires the Remote Registration cables to be connected together.
If you attempt diagnostic remote programming and it immediately returns FAILED (before any prompts), it often indicates diagnostic remote programming is not supported and you must use the manual registration connector method.
Remote Registration Connectors (Where to Find Them)
These connectors are typically located:
- Under the driver-side kick panel
- Next to the accelerator pedal
- Two white cable connectors that must be plugged into each other
✅ These two connectors must be plugged into each other before manual remote registration will work.
1998–2003 — Liberty Remote Programming (Manual)
✅ Requirement: Remote Registration cables must be connected
✅ Method: Central locking switch on door controls
Max 3 remotes
- Ensure the Remote Registration connectors are connected
- Press and HOLD the central locking switch to the LOCK position
- Interior lamp will flash
- Vehicle may emit an audible sound
- This indicates remote registration mode is active
- Press UNLOCK, then LOCK on the first remote
- Doors should lock/unlock to confirm successful programming
- Repeat Step 3 for any additional remotes (up to 3)
- Disconnect the Remote Registration connectors and test operation
🔁 If Step 2 fails when holding LOCK, try holding the switch in the UNLOCK position instead.
2003–2009 — Liberty Remote Programming (Manual)
✅ Requirement: Remote Registration cables must be connected
✅ Method: Central locking switch on door controls
Max 3 remotes
Follow the same procedure as 1998–2003:
- Connect the registration connectors
- Hold central locking switch to LOCK (or try UNLOCK if needed)
- Press UNLOCK, then LOCK on the remote
- Repeat for additional remotes
- Disconnect connectors and test
2009–2013 — Liberty Remote Programming (Manual)
✅ Requirement: Remote Registration cables must be connected
✅ Method: Central locking switch on door controls
Max 3 remotes
Follow the same procedure as 1998–2003:
- Connect the registration connectors
- Hold central locking switch to LOCK (or try UNLOCK if needed)
- Press UNLOCK, then LOCK on the remote
- Repeat for additional remotes
- Disconnect connectors and test
2013–2020 — Liberty Remote Programming (OBD + Manual Fallback)
✅ Many Liberty models in this range program remotes via diagnostics using a “Program Remotes” function.
⚠️ However, some trim levels have been found to still use the older manual “join wires” (registration connector) method.
Option 1 — OBD / Diagnostic Remote Programming (Most Common)
- Use the Program Remotes function via diagnostics
- This is often in the same menu used for transponder programming
Option 2 — Manual Remote Programming (If OBD Fails)
If diagnostics immediately returns FAILED (before any prompts), it likely means no diagnostic remote programming is possible.
In that case:
- Confirm the Remote Registration connectors exist and are connected (join wires)
- Use the central locking switch manual method (same as 1998–2003)
- Program up to 3 remotes
- Disconnect connectors and test

⚠️ Common Reasons Liberty Remote Programming Fails
- Remote Registration connectors not connected (manual systems)
- Incorrect remote frequency or part number
- Vehicle battery voltage too low
- Aftermarket alarm/immobiliser interference
- Some models require diagnostic programming only
- Some models do not support diagnostic remote programming (FAILED immediately)
