Toyota Prado Remote Key Programming Guide (1996–2009)
🔑 Manual Remote Programming Procedures by Model & Year
This guide covers Toyota Prado remote key programming for common Australian models from 1996 to 2009, including 90 Series and early 120 Series variants.
⚠️ Important
These procedures program remote locking functions only (lock/unlock).
They do NOT program immobiliser transponder chips. If the vehicle will not start with a new key, diagnostic programming is required.
Before You Start (Read This First)
Prado remote programming is timing-sensitive and model dependent.
If you’ve tried the sequence a few times and:
- the locks never cycle
- there’s no confirmation
- the vehicle won’t enter programming mode
…stop and read the note below before continuing.
⚠️ If the Prado won’t enter programming mode:

Prado VZJ95 / RZJ95R
1996–1999 🔐 Remote Programming (Advanced Mode Selection)
This procedure supports ADD, REWRITE, CONFIRMATION, and PROHIBITION modes.
- Ensure the driver’s door is open and unlocked and the key is out of the ignition.
- Insert and remove the key TWICE within 5 seconds.
- Close and open the driver’s door TWICE within 40 seconds.
- Insert the key into the ignition and remove it (do not turn).
- Close and open the driver’s door TWICE within 40 seconds.
- Insert the key into the ignition.
- Close the driver’s door.
- Turn the ignition switch from LOCK → ON → LOCK at ~1-second intervals to select a mode:
- 1 time = ➕ ADD
- 2 times = 🔄 REWRITE
- 3 times = 🔍 CONFIRMATION
- 5 times = 🚫 PROHIBITION
- Remove the key.
🔒 The door locks will cycle LOCK → UNLOCK to confirm the selected mode
(except CONFIRMATION, which cycles every 2 seconds to show the number of remotes).
⚠️ If PROHIBITION mode is selected, opening the door completes the procedure immediately.
Programming the Remote (ADD / REWRITE)
Within 20 seconds of confirmation:
A. Press LOCK + UNLOCK together for 1–1.5 seconds, then release.
B. Within 3 seconds, press LOCK for more than 1 second, then release.
C. ✅ Success: locks cycle once
❌ Failure: locks cycle twice (repeat steps A–B)
D. Repeat for additional remotes.
- Open the driver’s door to complete programming.
Prado KZJ95R
2000–2002 🔐 Remote Programming (Same as 1996–1999)
The 2000–2002 KZJ95R uses the same procedure as the 1996–1999 models above, including:
- ADD / REWRITE / CONFIRMATION / PROHIBITION modes
- LOCK → ON → LOCK ignition selection
- LOCK + UNLOCK → then LOCK remote sequence
Follow the 1996–1999 steps exactly.
Prado GRJ / KZJ / RZJ
2002–2006 🔐 Remote Programming (Door / Ignition Method)
This procedure is used to program remote locking functions.
- Ensure the driver’s door is open and unlocked and the key is out of the ignition.
- Insert and remove the key TWICE within 5 seconds.
- Close and open the driver’s door TWICE within 40 seconds.
- Insert the key into the ignition and remove it ONCE.
- Close and open the driver’s door TWICE within 40 seconds.
- Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it on).
- Close the door.
- Turn the ignition switch from OFF → ON:
- 1 time = ➕ ADD (add without erasing)
- 2 times = 🔄 REWRITE (erase all and add new)
- 3 times = 🔍 CONFIRMATION
- Remove the key.
🔒 Door locks will cycle to confirm the selected mode.
Programming the Remote
Within 20 seconds:
A. Press LOCK + UNLOCK together for 1–1.5 seconds, then release.
B. Within 3 seconds, press LOCK for more than 1 second.
C. 🔒 1 lock cycle = success
🔒🔒 2 lock cycles = failure
D. Repeat for additional remotes.
- Open the driver’s door to complete programming.
Prado GRJ / KDJ
2006–2009 🔐 Remote Programming (Same as 2002–2006)
The 2006–2009 Prado GRJ / KDJ models use the same Door / Ignition Method as 2002–2006.
Follow the 2002–2006 procedure exactly, including ADD / REWRITE / CONFIRMATION modes.
⚠️ Common Reasons Prado Remote Programming Fails
- Incorrect remote frequency or part number
- Low vehicle battery voltage
- Aftermarket alarm or immobiliser interference
- Faulty door or ignition switches
- BCM not detecting the programming sequence
If the vehicle does not enter programming mode or fails to confirm, diagnostic programming may be required.
