🔑 Subaru BRZ Remote Programming (Manual Procedure)

Posted on:

This guide explains manual remote (keyless entry) programming for Subaru BRZ models from 2013 onwards.

⚠️ Important
This procedure programs remote locking functions only (lock / unlock).
It does NOT program immobiliser transponder chips, proximity keys, or push-to-start systems.

If your Subaru BRZ won’t enter programming mode, or diagnostic programming immediately returns FAILED, professional key programming may be required.

Before You Start (Critical Subaru Note)

Many Subaru BRZ models:

  • Do NOT support diagnostic remote programming
  • Will return FAILED immediately if attempted with scan tools
  • Require manual registration using under-dash connectors

If the required connectors are missing, damaged, or inaccessible, this procedure will not work.

🔐 Remote Programming (Manual Registration Connector Method)

Remote Registration Connectors (Important)

The remote registration connectors are located:

  • Under the driver-side kick panel
  • Near the accelerator pedal
  • Two white connectors that must be plugged into each other

⚠️ These connectors must be connected before programming can begin.

Manual Remote Programming Procedure

(Maximum 3 remotes)

This procedure uses the central locking switch on the driver’s door.

  1. Ensure the registration connectors are connected
  2. Sit in the vehicle with doors closed
  3. Press and HOLD the central locking switch in the LOCK position
    • Interior light will flash
    • An audible sound may be heard
    • This confirms remote registration mode
  4. Press UNLOCK, then LOCK on the first remote
    • Doors should lock/unlock to confirm success
  5. Repeat Step 4 for any additional remotes
  6. When finished, disconnect the registration connectors
  7. Test all remotes

🔁 If Step 3 fails when holding LOCK, try holding the switch in the UNLOCK position instead.

⚠️ Common Reasons Subaru BRZ Remote Programming Fails

Even when followed correctly, programming may fail due to:

  • Registration connectors not connected
  • Incorrect remote frequency or part number
  • Aftermarket alarm or immobiliser interference
  • Immobiliser faults (separate from remote locking)
  • Vehicle not supporting remote pairing

If manual programming fails, diagnostic key or immobiliser programming may be required.

Can a Locksmith Help If This Doesn’t Work?

Yes.

If your Subaru BRZ:

  • won’t enter registration mode
  • rejects the remote
  • requires immobiliser or transponder key programming
  • or you’ve lost all keys

a mobile automotive locksmith can help (model dependent).
