🔑 Subaru WRX Remote Programming (2013–Current) — Manual Method
This guide explains manual remote (keyless entry) programming for Subaru WRX models from 2013 onwards.
⚠️ Important
This procedure programs remote locking functions only (lock/unlock).
It does NOT program immobiliser transponder chips, smart/proximity keys, or push-to-start systems.
If your Subaru WRX won’t enter programming mode or the remote isn’t accepted, the vehicle may require diagnostic key or immobiliser programming.

Before You Start (Critical Subaru Note)
If you attempt diagnostic programming and it immediately returns FAILED (before any prompts to press buttons), it often indicates no diagnostic remote programming is possible.
In many cases, Subaru WRX remotes must be programmed using the Remote Registration connectors under the driver-side kick panel.
Remote Registration Connectors (Where to Find Them)
These connectors are typically located:
- Under the driver-side kick panel
- Next to the accelerator pedal
- Two white cable connectors that must be plugged into each other
✅ These two connectors must be plugged into each other before manual remote registration will work.

🔐 Remote Programming (Manual — Central Locking Switch Method)
✅ Requirement: Remote Registration cables must be connected
✅ Method: Central locking switch on the door controls
Max 3 remotes
Steps
- Ensure the Remote Registration connectors are connected
- Sit in the vehicle with doors closed
- Press and HOLD the central locking switch to the LOCK position
- The interior lamp will flash
- The vehicle may emit an audible sound
- This indicates remote registration mode is active
- On the first remote, press UNLOCK, then LOCK
- Doors should lock/unlock to confirm successful programming
- Repeat Step 4 for any additional remotes (up to 3)
- When finished, disconnect the Remote Registration connectors
- Test all remotes
🔁 If Step 3 fails when holding LOCK, try holding the switch in the UNLOCK position instead.
⚠️ Common Reasons WRX Remote Programming Fails
- Remote Registration connectors not connected
- Incorrect remote frequency or part number
- Low vehicle battery voltage
- Aftermarket alarm/immobiliser interference
- Immobiliser faults (separate from remote locking)
If the vehicle won’t enter registration mode or continues to reject the remote, professional assistance is recommended.
