Toyota Hilux Remote Key Programming Guide (2005–2020)

🔑 Manual Remote Programming Procedures by Model Year

This step-by-step guide covers manual remote key programming for Toyota Hilux models from 2005 to 2020.

⚠️ Important:
This procedure programs remote locking functions only (lock/unlock).
It does NOT program the immobiliser transponder chip. If your Hilux won’t start with a new key, diagnostic programming will be required.

Toyota Hilux 2005–2009

🔐 Remote Programming Procedure (Manual Method)

This procedure is used to program remote locking functions.

  1. Ensure the driver’s door is open and unlocked and the key is out of the ignition.
  2. Insert and remove the key from the ignition TWICE within 5 seconds.
  3. Close and open the driver’s door TWICE within 40 seconds.
  4. Insert the key into the ignition and remove it ONCE.
  5. Close and open the driver’s door TWICE within 40 seconds.
  6. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it on).
  7. Close the driver’s door.
  8. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON:
    • 1 time = ➕ ADD (add new remote without erasing existing)
    • 2 times = 🔄 REWRITE (erase all remotes and add new ones)
    • 3 times = 🔍 CONFIRMATION (check how many remotes are programmed)
  9. Remove the key from the ignition.

🔒 The door locks will now cycle LOCK → UNLOCK a number of times corresponding to the selected mode.

Programming the Remote

For ADD or REWRITE modes, within 20 seconds of door lock confirmation:

A. Press LOCK and UNLOCK together for 1–1.5 seconds, then release.
B. Within 3 seconds, press the LOCK button for more than 1 second, then release.
C. ✅ Success: Locks cycle once
❌ Failure: Locks cycle twice (repeat the procedure)
D. Repeat for any additional remotes.

  1. Open the driver’s door to complete the procedure.

Toyota Hilux 2009–2015

🔐 Remote Programming Procedure (Manual Method)

The procedure for 2009–2015 Toyota Hilux models is the same as the 2005–2009 method.

Follow all steps exactly as listed above, including ADD, REWRITE, and CONFIRMATION modes.

Toyota Hilux 2015–2020

🔐 Remote Programming Procedure (Manual Method)

Remotes are programmed manually using the same sequence.

  1. Ensure the driver’s door is open and unlocked and the key is out of the ignition.
  2. Insert and remove the key TWICE within 5 seconds.
  3. Close and open the driver’s door TWICE within 40 seconds.
  4. Insert the key into the ignition and remove it ONCE.
  5. Close and open the driver’s door TWICE within 40 seconds.
  6. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it on).
  7. Close the door.
  8. Turn ignition OFF → ON:
    • 1 time = ➕ ADD
    • 2 times = 🔄 REWRITE
    • 3 times = 🔍 CONFIRMATION
  9. Remove the key.

🔒 The door locks will cycle to confirm the selected mode.

Programming the Remote

Within 20 seconds:

A. Press LOCK + UNLOCK together for 1–1.5 seconds, then release.
B. Within 3 seconds, press LOCK for more than 1 second.
C. 🔒 1 lock cycle = success
🔒🔒 2 lock cycles = failure
D. Repeat for additional remotes.

  1. Open the driver’s door to finish.

Toyota Hilux 2020 and Newer

⚠️ Manual Remote Programming Support

Some 2020+ Toyota Hilux models still support manual remote programming using the procedure above.
If the vehicle does not enter programming mode, diagnostic programming will be required.

🛠️ Troubleshooting Toyota Hilux Key Programming Issues

Key programming issues in Toyota vehicles are often caused by unplugged switches or blown ECU fuses.

Toyota fault codes are very accurate, and diagnostic tools (such as the AD Tool) can identify issues similarly to dealer-level equipment.

Common Toyota Key Programming Fault Codes

  • B2780 – Key Unlock Warning Switch
    🔧 The most common fault. This switch must be connected for the vehicle to detect key insertion.
    Often unplugged to disable the ignition/key warning chime.

  • B2793 – Transponder Chip Malfunction
    ❌ Incorrect or incompatible transponder chip.

  • B2795 – Unmatched Key Code
    ⚠️ Key reading or compatibility issue.

  • B2784 – Antenna Coil Open / Short
    📡 Fault in the transponder ECU, key amplifier, or wiring.

  • B2799 – ECU Communication Corrupt
    🔌 Check and replace ECU B fuse in the engine bay fuse box.

Also check:

  • ECU A fuse
  • ECU B2 fuse (if fitted)

Even if the vehicle appears to operate normally, these fuses must be intact for key registration to work.
