🔑 Manual Remote Programming Procedures by Model Year
This step-by-step guide covers manual remote key programming for Toyota Hilux models from 2005 to 2020.
⚠️ Important
This procedure programs remote locking functions only (lock / unlock).
It does NOT program the immobiliser transponder chip.
If your Hilux won’t start with a new key, or the vehicle won’t enter programming mode, diagnostic programming will be required.
Before You Start (Read This First)
Manual remote programming on Toyota Hilux models is very timing-sensitive.
If the sequence is even slightly off, the vehicle will not enter programming mode.
If you’ve tried this multiple times with no response, stop and read the note below before continuing.

Toyota Hilux 2005–2009
🔐 Remote Programming Procedure (Manual Method)
This procedure is used to program remote locking functions only.
- Ensure the driver’s door is open and unlocked and the key is out of the ignition
- Insert and remove the key from the ignition TWICE within 5 seconds
- Close and open the driver’s door TWICE within 40 seconds
- Insert the key into the ignition and remove it ONCE
- Close and open the driver’s door TWICE within 40 seconds
- Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it on)
- Close the driver’s door
- Turn the ignition switch OFF → ON:
- 1 time = ➕ ADD (add new remote)
- 2 times = 🔄 REWRITE (erase all remotes, then add)
- 3 times = 🔍 CONFIRMATION (check how many remotes are programmed)
- Remove the key
🔒 The door locks will now cycle LOCK → UNLOCK to confirm the selected mode.
Programming the Remote
Within 20 seconds of lock confirmation:
A. Press LOCK + UNLOCK together for 1–1.5 seconds, then release
B. Within 3 seconds, press LOCK for more than 1 second, then release
C. ✅ Success: locks cycle once
❌ Failure: locks cycle twice (repeat procedure)
D. Repeat for any additional remotes
- Open the driver’s door to finish programming
Toyota Hilux 2009–2015

The procedure for 2009–2015 Toyota Hilux models is identical to the 2005–2009 method.
Follow all steps exactly as listed above, including ADD, REWRITE, and CONFIRMATION modes.
Toyota Hilux 2015–2020
🔐 Remote Programming Procedure (Manual Method)
Remotes are programmed manually using the same sequence.
- Ensure the driver’s door is open and unlocked and the key is out
- Insert and remove the key TWICE within 5 seconds
- Close and open the driver’s door TWICE within 40 seconds
- Insert and remove the key ONCE
- Close and open the driver’s door TWICE
- Insert the key (do not turn)
- Close the door
- Turn ignition OFF → ON:

- 3 times = 🔍 CONFIRMATION
- Remove the key
🔒 The door locks will cycle to confirm mode.
Programming the Remote
Within 20 seconds:

🛠️ Troubleshooting Toyota Hilux Key Programming Issues
If manual programming fails, the issue is often not the remote.
Toyota systems rely on multiple switches and ECUs being detected correctly.
Common Toyota Fault Codes

B2780 – Key Unlock Warning Switch
Most common fault. The vehicle cannot detect key insertion.
Often unplugged to disable the ignition warning chime. -
B2793 – Transponder Chip Malfunction
Incorrect or incompatible chip. -
B2795 – Unmatched Key Code
Key or remote compatibility issue. -
B2784 – Antenna Coil Open / Short
Fault in the transponder ECU or wiring. -
B2799 – ECU Communication Corrupt
Check ECU B fuse in engine bay.
Also inspect:
- ECU A fuse
- ECU B fuse
- ECU B2 fuse (if fitted)
Even if the vehicle drives normally, these must be intact for key registration to work.
